Things To Consider In Conducting Classroom Walkthroughs

By Tammie Caldwell

It is already in the middle of summer. Vacation is almost coming which makes every student excited. Yet there are things that the school principal and teachers must do to validate everything everyone has done inside the learning area. School leaders are the ones who are assigned in administering a classroom walkthrough to ensure the improvement of the teachers, students and the school.

School leaders must be able to stay in focus to this observation because it highly matters. A walkthrough must be done properly. There are things that the school leader must obtain in his mind to give what is truly beneficial in the learning environment. Classroom walkthroughs are also known as classroom observations. Some would even prefer to call it learning walks. The process is a tool for the professional development of school teachers. Here are things that can help you conduct a good walkthrough.

Before starting the walkthrough, the school leader must know things that reflect to the method first. Though observing the class may only take you a minimum of three minutes yet there are still a wide variety of things that you must do. It is advised to have the observation only for a few minutes. It is not only the school leader who is involved in this procedure but the executives, instructional leaders and the educators are also part of it as well.

Walkthroughs can give the school leaders and other assigned staff to supply feedback to the teacher they observe. The feedback can deeply help the teachers since they will start building reflections from it. Student achievement is also part of the observation.

During the walkthrough, observing the performance of the learners also matter since they are part of the learning environment. Even by just watching them for a few minutes will already give you perception about how active and engaging the learners are during the lesson sharing. What these students do, so you will know their engagement, is the way they take down notes, listen to the discussion or interact to the teacher.

Ethical standards must be shown during the lesson proper. It is fundamental that the learning objectives are related to the curriculum. Instructors must always do it to ensure students understanding towards the lesson given. It is inappropriate that educators will jump from a single lesson to another topic which is already far away from the preceding one.

Relation of the teachings to the previous learning targets is important since it aids in the better learning of the students. When lessons are not aligned then learners will find it complicated to understand. They will find the lesson confusing. An educator must be able to administer a good procedure and process.

The instructional schemes used by the educators are also useful even if there are a lot of it. Students find it easy to understand the lesson through a specified method. Teachers must select a technique which they think is efficient. The effectiveness of the chosen strategy can outstandingly affect the learning of the child.

Before you do the observation, it is advisable that you inform the staff first. You must also observe safety and health issues. The visit may be done only for a few minutes just to see of how effective the teacher is doing in sharing knowledge to the students. As an observer, you will also learn a lot from the teacher.
