Procedures For Wrinkle Treatment NYC Patients Should Consider

By Joanna Walsh

The development of lines and creases in the skin is a natural process which occurs as people age. Certain factors such as smoking, poor skincare, and excessive sun exposure can result in more wrinkles at an earlier age. Fortunately there are several effective options for wrinkle treatment NYC, NY clients can undergo to correct this issue.

The first step to smoother, younger-looking skin is to schedule an appointment with a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist. The doctor will take the patient's age, skin type, and the depth, location, and amount of unwanted facial lines into consideration and determine whether a single technique or combination thereof is needed to achieve the desired results.

The least invasive form of wrinkle treatment are the injectables. Commonly used to treat crow's feet around the eyes, forehead furrows, and frown lines between the eyebrows, Botox is one type of injectable. This approach is used for creases in the skin caused by overactive facial muscles which become paralyzed and smooth when injected with a purified neurotoxin produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. After about 3 to 6 months, it will be necessary to repeat the procedure.

Not all lines and creases can be treated with Botox, some require the use of an injectable filler such as hyaluronic acid instead. These substances are often applied to sunken areas around the mouth and nose to make them look fuller and reduce the appearance of lines. Fillers tend to give longer-lasting results than Botox.

Natural fat and collagen can also be injected into areas of the face which have lost volume, resulting in formation of folds or lines. Collagen creates fuller lips, and can also be used to minimize wrinkles. Fat is harvested elsewhere on the patient's body, usually the abdominal region, and then it is strategically injected to fill out areas where lines have formed.

Laser resurfacing is also a popular approach used to address wrinkles. Fine lines on the surface can usually be eliminated using a laser procedure known as intense pulsed light which utilizes multiple light wavelengths. Deeper creases respond better to the application of an ablative laser such as the YAG, which actually destroys the top layer of skin and stimulates collagen production and the growth of a new, healthy epidermis.

The most invasive and costly of treatments to eliminate and minimize wrinkles is the face-lift procedure. This requires surgery and the use of a general anesthesia. The surgeon makes small incisions along the side of the face, pulls the skin back to its new position, and stitches it in place. It can take several months to heal, but the results are generally quite dramatic and they can last as long as ten years in some patients.

The length of healing time depends on how invasive a procedure was used. Most of these treatments will involve some degree of discomfort, and some discoloration and bruising, but these usually heal quickly. In most cases, this type of procedure is not covered by insurance, but there are numerous private loan and financing companies which provide installment plan options to patients.
